Website Jargon Explained
Hosting is where the website resides on a server, much like having files on your computer that can be accessed by anyone who types in a website address i.e. www.yourdomain.co.uk but obviously the server where the website address is much more secure.
Domain names are a name that is given to a website that allows a user to type that domain name into a browser address bar and access the website attached to that domain name.
Ecommerce is a name given to online shops. Online shops are where you can purchase advertised goods online; a known example of an ecommerce website would be www.amazon.co.uk Ecommerce website's can sell anything from products to services. The way it works is a user will go on to the ecommerce website and browse through the products or services. They will then make a choice to purchase; they will then go on to pay through the website. The ecommerce website owner will then be notified of a purchase and the payment will appear within the nominated method (payment gateways such as paypal.co.uk are used for this purpose).
Payment gateways are a method of accepting online payments. Online payments can be in the form of goods purchased from ecommerce website or services that a business / individual provide. These payments can be in the form of a lump sum or a subscription to a service or product.
Blog's or "web blog" is a website that provides constant updated information from the blog owner. The website owner usually enters constant information of any given subject and publishes that information on the blog website. Photographs / images and video can also accompany the blog entries. A well known blog website would be www.blogger.com
RSS feeds are similar to a blog but allow you to read blog's and articles that you have subscribed too in one place using an RSS reader. The RSS feed icon usually resembles this:

Unusually the name of your business or the service you offer. We will check for you to see if the domain name is available to order. If not we can advise on a similar domain name.
- How do you buy a domain name?
We will do it for you all included in the price.
- What design elements should you consider? I.e. flash (animation), photographs colour's and styles.
Take a look around the internet; have you seen a website you like? Do you have any printed material that you would like to relate to the website? We can also find you photographs or videos for your website at extra cost.
- What functionality does the website need? I.e. ecommerce (online shopping) data to be retrieved, accept payments, online photo albums?
This all depends what you would like the website to do. We do have programmers that can build you any website function.
- How will the website be updated with new text and images?
You can either opt for our Content Managed website or we can update the website for you, this usually carries an extra cost.
- How will the website achieve a good position in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing?
Not unless we optimise it for the search engines. Google, Yahoo and Bing all position a website better after we promote the website for you. - Can you guarantee my website will be at the top of the search engines?
